They could try to destroy the first one, but that never works, look at all the different fractions of christianity now. They tried to wipe each other out in influence, it didnt work, so they live in tolerance of each other. Not liking each other, but tolerance.

Rome whiped Greece out... and more or less BECAME it. the U.S. whipped Brits, but they're still overseas. it does never work, but you still have the freewill to break off and fight back, and that's what counts. because if you have freewill, there's a possibility that you just might be able to MAKE it work.

The freewill works both ways, because at heart the individuality will never die because it still exists in some way or another. And the cultures blended together in name but never in spirit, look how different Greek dress was from Roman, and look how it stayed the same. Its really just a question of the underlying core belief that keeps them going.

While our culture may have formed from yours, ours has progressed differently, evolving into an entirely new one. Your culture adopted many things from our evolved version of yours. Yours, you see, is just as reliant on ours as ours was on yours to start. However even in colonial times people in the colonies thought of themselves as american even if second to english.
